Blackstone, referenced by Dolly towards Charlie on page 163, was a magician who specialized in disappearing acts on the coattails of Houdini in the 1930s, 40s, and 50s. Blackstone was the inspiration for the 1948-49 radio show Blackstone the Magic Detective, which used flashbacks of a magical mystery based on varying objects from his magic studio, which can only be solved with the help of magic. These shows were especially attractive to young audiences because at the end of each show, Blackstone would teach the listeners how to perform their own illusions for their friends.
